HELINIKO OLYMPIC COMPLEX
It is made up of a few temporary structures (which will be removed when the Olympics are over), plus hang-gliding facilities with artificial lakes and waterfalls. After the Olympics they will be transformed into leisure areas, as part of a big project to build the biggest and most important city park in Europe.
It consists of 5 separate venues
- Olympic Canoe/Kayak Slalom Centre was built on the site of the former Helliniko Airport.
- Olympic Hockey Centre was newly built and has one large and one smaller pitch with seating for 7,300 and 2,100 spectators respectively. There is also a warm up pitch for use by the athletes.
- Olympic Baseball Centre consisting of two baseball diamonds and catering for 8,700 and 4,000 spectators.
- Olympic Softball Stadium with seating for 4,800 spectators.
- Indoor Arena & Fencing Hall is an indoor arena with adjoining fencing hall that hosted the fencing competition, finals of the handball and the preliminary rounds of the basketball competitions. This was constructed by making structural improvements to the existing hangar that was once used by Olympic Airways, the national airline carrier of Greece, for repairs.
